On 20 September, International Sarcoma Day, the Asociación Iker presented the cheque with the annual collection to Dr. César Serrano, head of the VHIO Sarcoma Translational Research Group.
The Asociación Iker, which has been active since 2021, was started by María Susmozas after the passing of her partner Iker from myxoid liposarcoma, to support research into this disease and improve the quality of life of patients affected by myxoid liposarcoma.
This organization supports research into this type of sarcoma and provides support for patients and their families, particularly during palliative care.
MYXOID LIPOSARCOMA, A RARE TUMOR
Myxoid liposarcoma is a type of sarcoma found in soft tissues and specifically affects fatty tissue, predominating in the extremities. This liposarcoma, which has a low incidence, is a malignant tumour that usually affects young adults.
Nowadays, liposarcoma is usually treated with surgery, usually accompanied by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. But one of the main problems faced by patients suffering from this disease is the lack of effective therapies, because of the low incidence of this tumour.
For this reason, the Asociación Iker raises funds yearly to promote research into this type of liposarcoma.
Dr. César Serrano, during the cheque presentation, was able to briefly detail what research is currently being carried out thanks to the contribution made by the association last year:
“Myxoid liposarcoma affects young adults and has few treatment options. The contribution of the Asociación Iker has enabled us to learn how certain molecules involved in DNA repair and cell signalling promote tumour growth and how to combat them with available treatments.”
In this way, thanks to opening these new lines of research, we can better understand the behaviour of this liposarcoma and find more effective treatments for each patient.
“The association is always thinking about how to raise more funds. Whether through charity events, charity markets, or the Christmas lottery. Everything adds up, and we aim for our contribution to grow year after year. We know that we are helping research to continue”, explained Maria Susmoza from the Asociación Iker.
About the Asociación Iker
The objectives of the association are to promote research into myxoid liposarcoma by funding research projects. As well as providing support to patients to guide them to specialized health centers for this disease.
On the other hand, they aim to give visibility to palliative care and dedicate a space to the accompaniment of patients and their families. “This important work is very helpful during the illness.”
