The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) has officially announced this year’s class of Fellows of the AACR Academy. The Class of 2025 has elected 33 new Fellows including VHIO’s Director Josep Tabernero, bringing the total number of Fellows to 375.
All AACR Fellows are world leaders in the cancer field whose work has had a significant and enduring impact on cancer research. They are also committed to helping to advance the mission of AACR to prevent and cure all cancers through research, education, communication, collaboration, science policy and advocacy, and funding for cancer research.
“I am incredibly honored and humbled to have been elected to the 2025 prestigious class of AACR Academy Fellows. As a longstanding and proud member of AACR, I am truly dedicated to helping to advance its mission. As such, I very much look forward to further serving the AACR alongside all the newly elected and existing Fellows,” said Josep Tabernero, Head of the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital’s Medical Oncology Department.
Specifically, Josep has been elected as an AACR Fellow for his cutting-edge contributions to translational gastrointestinal cancer research, from the biological basis of disease to the clinical implementation of novel therapies and application of biomarkers in clinical trials; for the development of patient-derived xenograft models that have advanced therapies targeting the HER/ERK and PI3K signaling pathways in RAS/RAF-wild type and -mutant cancers; and for identifying predictive biomarkers to optimize treatment response and overcome therapeutic resistance.
The 2025 class of Fellows of the AACR Academy will be formerly inducted into the AACR Academy during this year’s AACR Annual Meeting (AM2025), April 25-30 in Chicago, Illinois. In celebration of their collective contributions to cancer science and medicine which have accelerated significant innovation and progress against this disease, they will be recognized during the meeting’s Opening Ceremony, Sunday April 27.
