Last Tuesday, as part of the upcoming LGTBQIA+ Pride Day celebrated on June 28, VHIO hosted the training session “LGTBQIA+ Diversity in Science, Technology and Innovation”, led by PRISMA, an association for gender and affective-sexual diversity in science, technology and innovation. The activity, organized by VHIO’s Equality and Diversity Committee, was voluntary and open to all staff, bringing together professionals from both research and management areas.
The session offered a safe, participatory space for open dialogue, exploring key concepts about affective-sexual diversity such as the sex-gender distinction, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, all presented from a clear, respectful and accessible perspective. Participants also reviewed robust and evidence-based data on discrimination in research and reflected on the positive impact of diversity in science. The discussion highlighted how a diversity of perspectives and lived experiences not only improves the well-being of research teams but also enhances the quality and innovation of scientific work.
In the final part of the session, the 10 PRISMA Measures were presented— a practical guide and action plan to foster LGBTQIA+ equality in research centers and STI environments.
Second awareness-raising session: Sharing (and listening to) LGTBQIA+ experiences
Also, in celebration of Pride Month, and following the positive response to the experience-sharing session held on March 8th, the VHIO Equality and Diversity Committee is organizing a second edition of the awareness-raising workshop, this time with a focus on LGTBQIA+ perspectives.
The session will take place on July 9 at 10:00 a.m. and aims to offer a safe and inclusive space to share personal experiences about LGTBQIA+ reality in STEM, both during academic training and throughout professional careers.
The session will be led by Mary Fariña Morillas (predoctoral researcher) and Adrià Marcos Morales (research assistant).
Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) is also marking Pride Month with several initiatives, including the event “Research with Pride”, which will take place on June 30 and is open to any VHIO staff members who wish to attend.
