Singer, songwriter, guitarist and leader of the renowned Spanish rock group Jarabe de Palo, Pau Donés, is organizing an inspired fundraising campaign to support essential research into novel therapies against metastatic colorectal cancer.
Pau, who was recently diagnosed with colorectal cancer harboring the BRAF mutation, and is currently undergoing treatment at the Vall d´Hebron University Hospital (HUVH), is also firmly centering his efforts on debunking stigma about cancer by promoting open dialogue about the disease as well as confronting it with determined positivity and hope.
Announced yesterday in the Spanish periodical, El Periódico, Pau´s fundraising concert will take place on 22 December, 21:00h (doors opening at 20:00h), at the Luz de Gas concert venue in Barcelona — the proceeds of which are destined to fuel research into novel, targeted therapies aimed at improved outcomes for colorectal cancer patients with BRAF-mutated tumors. Given that this tumor subtype bears a poorer prognosis and that there are limited therapeutic options for these patients, pioneering clinical studies led by VHIO researchers and HUVH physician-scientists, who represent a multidisciplinary and translational task force against colorectal cancer, currently focus on developing novel and more effective therapeutics to ultimately provide new opportunities for these patients.
One such undertaking, launched last week at VHIO – the MoTriColor pan-European H2020 Project – will lead and conduct early phase clinical trials in colorectal cancer with advanced disease, based on specific molecular profiles. Two Catalan Institutions (VHIO and ICO/Idibell) are participating members of this clinically-oriented H2020 Project. According to gene expression profiles, patients will be matched to a particular clinical trial to identify sensitivity of individual patients to the proposed experimental therapies. This research represents an important forward step in developing more precise and effective anti-cancer therapies for these patients.
“On behalf of VHIO I take this opportunity to gratefully thank Pau Donés for his tremendous support for essential research against cancer, his enormous generosity, commitment, and his boundless positivity, creativity, zest and zeal – a true inspiration to us all. I would also like to encourage you to support the cause by purchasing a concert ticket via El Periódico,” says Josep Tabernero, Director of VHIO.
Concert tickets can be purchased online at: http://entradas.elperiodico.com.
Lastly, to help us to spread the word and promote the concert, we invite you to view and share a video shot last week by Pau with just some of VHIO´s personnel, researchers and HUVH physician-scientists who collectively represent a driving force against colorectal cancer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yk_7Jlldank.
