To mark its 25th Anniversary, Spanish healthcare periodical Diario Médico has just announced its 25 Ambassadors of Spanish Healthcare, elected for their outstanding work in biomedicine. Applauding the tremendous dedication of the selected 25, this special recognition honors their commitment to pioneering research and advancing the treatment and care of patients across Spain.

Prior to opening the vote to its readers, Diario Médico – in collaboration with medical experts and the pharmaceutical company Merck, identified a list of more than 100 candidates across Spain. Some 5000 healthcare professionals then voted online for their preferred candidates, the results of which determined the 50 finalists.

The winning 25, including VHIO’s Director, Josep Tabernero, were selected by an expert committee comprised of Fernando Carballo, President of the Spanish Federation of Scientific and Medical Associations (FACME); Joaquín Poch, President of the Spanish Royal Academy of Medicine; Carmen Fernández, Director of Diario Médico; Serafín Romero, President of the General Council of Physicians (OMC); Isabel Sánchez, Medical Director of Merck, Spain, and Javier Olave, former Director of the periodical.

This award not only recognizes Josep’s dedicated efforts aimed at rendering cancer science, treatment and care more precise, but also praises his devotion to advancing the practice of medical oncology. Having published more than 250 papers in the most renowned journals of International prestige, he is a leading authority in oncology the world over. These are just some of the many achievements that also earned him his title as President-elect of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), for which he will serve as President in a matter of days (his two-year term commences this coming January).

Most recently, these accomplishments have led to his inclusion in the Web of Science’s 2017 listing of Highly Cited Researchers, and, in recognition of VHIO’s purely integrative and translational research model that he pioneers, our Institute won a European Alliance for Personalised Medicine (EAPM) Health Innovation Five ´HI-5´ Award under the category of Best EU-based hospital for integrating personalised cancer medicine. At national level, the Medical Oncology Department of the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital (HUVH), also championed by Josep, has just ranked first among clinical services in medical oncology with the very best reputation in Spain for a fourth year running.

This latest recognition received from Diario Médico further salutes Josep’s dedication to advancing cancer research, treatment and care. On behalf of all of us at VHIO, we congratulate him for this award and also extend our felicitations to Xavier Montalban, Head of the HUVH’s Neurology – Neuroimmunology Department, the Vall d’Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus, who is also among today’s 25 winners.
