Latest editorial penning from VHIO’s Director and ESMO President, Josep Tabernero: All change: closing the gender gap in oncology

In his latest editorial our Director and 2018-2019 President of the European Society for Oncology (ESMO), Josep Tabernero, reviews and comments on findings recently reported from two studies published in the Society’s open access publication, ESMO Open.

The two articles that center on both the status of women occupying leadership roles in oncology and gender-related challenges revealed through an associated survey, were inspired and led by ESMO’s Women for Oncology (W4O) Committee that is currently chaired by Solange Peters, also ESMO President-elect.

Not only does Josep highlight the worrisome statistics exposed by these papers, suggest possible directions towards necessary change, he also discusses the need to better support and nurture upcoming talents – irrespective of gender – by relieving the rapidly mounting pressures triggered by the fast-paced, rapidly emerging era of precision medicine in oncology.

His focus also extends to the crucial importance and place of the #Metoo against harassment movement in cancer science and medicine.
