Published today, Clarivate Analytics has revealed its who’s who on the annual Global Highly Cited Researchers (HCRs) List for 2018. Featuring among the 4000+ top drawer leading researchers across 21 fields of the sciences and social sciences covered by the Essential Science Indicator (ESI), is VHIO’s Director, Josep Tabernero. Enriqueta Felip, Principal Investigator of our Thoracic Tumors & Head and Neck Cancer Group, is also named in an additional list of experts under the newly introduced category ‘cross-field’ to recognize the outstanding work of researchers who publish highly cited papers in several fields but not enough in any one field to be chosen.
Now in its fifth edition, the citation analysis identifies the most influential researchers as determined by their peers around the globe – those who have consistently won recognition in the form of high citation counts over a decade. The Web of Science serves as the basis for the regular listings of researchers whose citation records rank them in the top 1% for their field and year. Their consistent production of highly cited papers reflects their essential contributions and utility of their work as repeatedly judged by their peers.

Out of these, a total of ten are from Spain with five of these listees from Catalonia. They are: Joan Bladé, Jordi Bruix and Elías Campo from the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), Josep M. Llovet, the University of Barcelona, and Jesús San Miguel at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra. On behalf of all at VHIO, we salute and congratulate Josep for this latest accolade to recognize his phenomenal achievements as well as applaud the outstanding work of these other five global leaders in oncology.
Other statistics surrounding regional concentrations of top talent reveal that Spain ranks 10th in the Top 10 list of countries with the number of Highly Cited Researchers represented, counting a total of 115. While HCRs represent more than 60 nations this year, more than 80% of them are from the 10 nations named in this list.

Devised to ‘house’ frontier areas of research that are frequently interdisciplinary, the newly launched cross-field category recognizes some additional 2000 researchers who have been identified as having an exceptional performance based on high impact papers in several fields during the last decade. We are proud to report that among these multi-field contributors who have been selected in on or more of the 21 broad fields, is VHIO’s Enriqueta Felip. Also on this list is María Buti, Head of Hepatology at Vall d´Hebron University Hospital, the Vall d´Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus. We extend our huge congratulations to them both.
Finally, we would like to recognize two other existing Highly Cited Researchers to have come from the Vall d´Hebron University Hospital ‘stable’ of leading physician-scientists: José Baselga, President of VHIO’s Internal Scientific Committee, and Antoni Ribas at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), who was a former Resident at HUVH.
