Reflective of our Director’s expertise and international standing in oncology, he was recently invited for comment in the December issues of Nature Medicine as well as a recently launched sister publication of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), JACC: CardioOncology:
First up, the final edition of Nature Medicine for 2019 also celebrates the end of its 25thanniversary year. To mark the occasion, a special news article featured several experts who were invited by the journal to answer one question: What will shape the next 25 years of medical research?
A total of 11 thought leaders, including VHIO’s Director, Josep Tabernero –the only selected contributor from Spain- shared their particular perspectives and predictions for the future.
Just some of the many areas under discussion included the more effective harnessing of big data, the future ahead for gene therapy, strengthening of prevention strategies, the integration of precision medicine in national healthcare system, achieving an all-inclusive research culture, the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, targeting mechanisms of ageing, the importance of multi-stakeholder partnerships and tailored policy-making, as well as implementation research.

Back in September this year, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC)* launched its seventh sister publication, JACC: CardioOncology, edited by Bonnie Ky, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia (USA). Published open access, this journal centers on the rapidly emerging field of cardio-oncology and provides an essential educational platform through which to connect cardiologists and oncologists as well as report on the very latest cross-specialty developments.
Josep was selected to co-author the journal’s second ever Leadership Page, the first of which** was superbly compiled by Richard J. Kovacs, President, American College of Cardiology (ACC), and Howard A. Burris III, President, American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). In his capacity as President of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), Josep was paired with Barbara Casadei, President of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and Professor Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford (UK).
Updating on the convergence of cardiology and oncology both Presidents review the various parallels shared by the two Societies, highlight worrisome statistics and forecasts, roadmap collaborative directions ahead, and state the case for immediate action to strengthen policy points and more effectively promote and implement prevention strategies – particularly in low-and middle-income countries.
