Barcelona, June 29, 2020.- The National Research Award, with a 30-year history, is one of the most prestigious awards bestowed by the Catalonian Government and the Catalonian Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI). This year, the award has gone to the director of Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO), Dr. Josep Tabernero. With this award, Dr. Tabernero is recognized as one of the most relevant medical researchers with the most significant contributions to international research in oncology, especially in the field of gastrointestinal tumours and molecular therapies.
Dr. Tabernero is the Director of VHIO, head of the Unit of Oncology of Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, and leader of the Research Unit for Molecular Therapy of Cancer (UITM) “la Caixa”. In the recent years, Dr. Tabernero has been a leading figure in the development of new treatments for colorectal cancer based on the molecular characteristics of the tumor. Moreover, Dr. Tabernero has contributed to the development of biomarker tests for the diagnosis and follow-up of the disease and the identification of resistances.
The National Research Award also recognizes the efforts of Dr. Josep Tabernero and his team to use state-of-the-art experimental tools such as liquid biopsy or xenografts in animal models in their preclinical and translational studies, or be the first to define molecular subtypes of colorectal cancer.
From VHIO, we want to give our heartiest congratulations to Dr. Tabernero for this new recognition to his outstanding career. We also congratulate the other award-winners of this year, Dr. Silvia Osuna, an ICREA research professor at the Institute of Computational Chemistry and Catalysis (IQCC) of the University of Girona (UdG), in the category of Young Talents; the Scientific Foundation of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (ACCC), in the category of Scientific Sponsors; the Catalonian Association of Scientific Communication (ACCC) in the category of Scientific Communication; and the Ricoh Additive Manufacturing Centre (Ricoh-CIM UPC) for the Public-private R&D Partnership Award.
