As it does every spring, this past weekend — May 31st and June 1st — the Festa de la Ciència festival took place in Barcelona. In its 18th edition, the Museum of the History of Barcelona in Born was filled with activities from different scientific fields: games, experiments, workshops, shows, guided tours, and exhibitions, that attracted more than 300 people of all ages
Storytelling to understand medical imaging
Among all the activities, Luz María Atlaglich and Adrià Marcos Morales, researchers from VHIO’s Radiomics Group, performed the storytelling session “‘Tengo un hueso roto: Las aventuras de Marvin en el Hospital’. Through the story of Marvin, a child who goes to the hospital after a fall, Luz and Adrià guided the audience, interactively, through various medical imaging tests, helping them better understand the science behind these technologies.
More than 50 people — children and their families — followed Marvin’s adventures with great interest and were able to clear up their questions about X-rays, CT scans, and MRI in a fun and approachable way.
VHIO’s Radiomics Group, supported by the “la Caixa” Foundation, the FERO Foundation, and the CRIS contra el cancer Foundation, works to develop innovative tools that improve cancer diagnosis and treatment through medical image analysis.
VHIO and its commitment to science communication
One of VHIO’s core commitments as a Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence is to bring scientific knowledge closer to society. To this end, it runs a science communication program that includes both its own initiatives — such as the Open Day or the VHIOTalks — and participation in well-established events in the city, like the Festa de la Ciència.
