Year in, year out we cannot stress enough that without the precious funding and continued backing that we receive from our institutional supporters and patrons; the Government of Catalonia, CELLEX Foundation, Fero Foundation, ”la Caixa”, and the BBVA Foundation, as well as private institutions, companies, individuals, international and national competitive grants (1).
Simply put, without this collective conviction and strong belief in VHIO’s multidisciplinary and translational team science, our efforts aimed at solving cancer sooner would at best be futile, at worst cease to exist. As such, VHIO talents can and will only continue to extend and apply discovery in cancer research to an increasing number of patients thanks to this continued support.
Commenting for VHIO Communications our Director, Josep Tabernero, observed, “As researchers, our efforts are sometimes rewarded through accolades, prizes and grants. While competitive, robust science of excellence must of course be recognized, so must the efforts and dedication of our supporters, funding forces and sources.”
He continued, “As such, we are delighted to report that two of our patrons, the BBVA Foundation and CELLEX Foundation, have both been prized this month for their tremendous support of biomedical science and healthcare.”
More specifically, the BBVA Foundation has received a prize bestowed by the national periodical ABC’s Health Section under the category of Foundation of the Year. Now in their 11th annual edition (2), these accolades, Premios ABC Salud, applaud important contributions made to advancing healthcare.
This year’s award shines light on the Foundation’s spurring of progress against cancer, cardiovascular as well as neurodegenerative diseases, and metabolic disorders. It does so by funding biomedical research programs of excellence, pioneering projects including our BBVA-VHIO Comprehensive Program of Cancer Immunotherapy & Immunology – CAIMI (3), and awarding its prestigious grants and prizes.
The Government of Catalonia’s annual Josep Trueta medals and plaques were established 1998 to commemorate the centenary of the birth of renowned doctor and scientist Josep Trueta Raspall. Similarly, they are awarded to health professionals and organizations that have significantly contributed to the advancement of healthcare.
Announced earlier this week, CELLEX has received one of the 23 recognitions for this year (4), honoring the Foundation’s many initiatives that have accelerated biomedical research and improved healthcare across Catalonia. The many entities that have been fortunate to benefit from the late Dr. Pere Mir´s conviction, who both founded and presided over the Foundation -and thus funding from CELLEX- include VHIO, the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital (HUVH), Insitute of Phototonic Sciences (ICFO), IDIBAPS Institute of the Hospital Clinic, other leading hospitals across Catalonia, as well as the Centro de Formación Interdisciplinaria Superior (CFIS).

These important investments continue to drive major advances in biomedical research and improved outcomes for countless patients ‘at home’ and away,” concluded Josep.
