Barcelona, September 10, 2020.- The countdown is now on as we all look forward to participating at ESMO’s Virtual Congress 2020, The Latest Advances in Oncology, 19-21 September, presided by ESMO President, Solange Peters (Lausanne, Switzerland), and co-chaired by John Haanen (Amsterdam, Netherlands), flanked by the Scientific Sub-Committee’s Track Chairs; also world renowned experts within their respective fields.
In addition to the many latest advances in cancer science and medicine to first outing during this month’s Congress, as well as myriad program highlights and educational opportunities, the Women In Science Sessions have been superbly developed by ESMO’s Women for Oncology Committee (W40), chaired by Pilar Garrido (Madrid, Spain). ESMO’s W4O initiative launched back in 2015 to address the challenges faced by female oncologists aiming to undertake leadership roles during their careers, and is comprised of leaders within the oncology field including the Core Membership of VHIO’s Elena Garralda, Executive Director of VHIO’s Research Unit for Molecular Therapy of Cancer (UITM) – “la Caixa” and Principal Investigator of our Early Clinical Drug Development Group, as well as the Extended Memberships of our Director, Josep Tabernero, and Enriqueta Felip, Principal Investigator of Thoracic Tumors & Head and Neck Cancer at VHIO.
Commenting for VHIO Communications, Josep Tabernero, who is also ESMO’s Past-President and Member of its Executive Board (2020-2022), observed, “The ESMO Virtual Congress 2020’s Women for Oncology Program provides the essential forum for the debate and exchange on and around several issues from multiple standpoints. Just some under this year’s meeting lens include the status quo of female representation in research and publications, impact of the current COVID-19 era, and advancing women in science from the perspective of Jocalyn Clark, Executive Editor of The Lancet.”
The W4O Women in Science Program kicks off on Thursday 17 September with a fascinating Facebook Roundtable entitled Has the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated gender inequalities, which is free of charge and open to all, followed by the W4OWomen in Science and live Q&A Session on Sunday 20 September – open to Congress participants only, and expert Membership Sessions which are open to everyone upon registration, that will tackle the following trio of timely topics: How to re-enter the scientific arena after maternity leave, Optimal time management in paper and grant writing, and How to investigate the situation of women in your own country.
