Since 2022, the Bioinformatics Journal Club has served as an internal forum at VHIO dedicated to fostering collaboration, sharing expertise, and optimizing computational and bioinformatics resources across research groups.
The Journal Club meets monthly to explore emerging topics in computational biology and bioinformatics that are transversal to VHIO’s research programs. Each session typically features a presentation by a volunteer researcher in the bioinformatics field with different backgrounds and expertise. This community member presents and discusses a relevant scientific article, offering complementary perspectives, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue across VHIO and enriching the collective understanding of cutting-edge developments in the field.
In addition to research updates, the meetings also include brief updates on VHIO’s computational infrastructure, including its high-performance computing cluster and other technical resources, ensuring that participants stay informed about developments that support their work.
Currently coordinated by Irene Agustí from the VHIO’s Bioinformatics Unit, which is led by Lara Nonell, the initiative continues to grow and evolve. As she explains:
“The Bioinformatics Journal Club creates a space where computational expertise becomes collective knowledge. By sharing challenges and solutions openly, we strengthen both our science and our collaboration across VHIO.”
Each meeting concludes with an open discussion, encouraging constructive feedback, cross-disciplinary exchange, and the development of new collaborative initiatives.
The Vision Behind the Initiative
The Bioinformatics Journal Club was originally conceived nearly five years ago by Lara Nonell, José A. Seoane, Group Leader of VHIO’s Cancer Computational Biology Group, together with bioinformaticians Mary Fariña and Arnau Llinàs. Recognizing the rapid expansion of computational technologies and the increasing complexity of bioinformatics in cancer research, they identified the need for a structured and recurring forum to connect computational scientists across the institute.
As José recalls: “We saw the need for a regular forum where computational scientists could openly discuss projects, methods, and technical developments. What makes me especially happy is seeing how it has grown. I still remember when we were only four members; nowadays, each session brings together 30 participants or more.”
Their vision was to create a dedicated space where VHIO’s computational scientists, data specialists, and bioinformatics professionals could exchange knowledge, align methodologies, and strengthen collaborative efforts—ultimately building a stronger, more connected community.
The Bioinformatics Journal Club operates within the framework of the VHIO-CRIS Precision Intelligence & Oncology Network for Enhanced Evidence & Research (PIONEER) Program, which supports the establishment of new multimodal data digitalization units. These units work collaboratively to expand VHIO’s capabilities in data-driven oncology research. The Club was previously supported by the Severo Ochoa program.
