A seal of scientific leadership at global level: VHIO accredited as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence

Severo Ochoa VHIO

The Center of Excellence Severo Ochoa Award, granted within the subprogram of the Spanish Institutional Strengthening of the State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research & Innovation, recognizes national research centers that demonstrate scientific leadership of excellence and impact at global level.

Conferring reputation and social and scientific recognition, this accreditation, awarded annually, is valid for four years and renewable thereafter through re-application for the same rigorous evaluation carried out independently by an international scientific committee comprised of prestigious researchers with high impact.

From the 2020 call, managed by the State Research Agency, VHIO is the only newly accredited Center of Excellence Severo Ochoa, alongside the other six re-awarded research centers. Set within the Vall d’Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus, VHIO is also the first research center linked to the national healthcare system to have received this distinction.

“This prestigious recognition reflects our Institute’s important contributions to cancer science and precision medicine in oncology at international level. It also confirms VHIO’s scientific leadership and proven capacity to advance frontier research, generate high-impact results, as well as attract and retain research talent,” said VHIO’s Director, Josep Tabernero.

“This accolade further encourages all of us at VHIO to continue to transform the many challenges in cancer research and clinical oncology into opportunities for those who matter most; our cherished patients,” added Josep Tabernero, who is also Head of the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital’s (HUVH) Medical Oncology Department, and Past-President of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO).

“It is thanks to the tremendous dedication and work of all our teams that we have obtained this distinction in record time; within two years of presenting our candidacy,” said Alejandro Piris, Scientific Research Manager at VHIO.

The aid has been funded by the State Agency for Research ( Agencia Estatal de Investigación) (CEX2020-001024-S / AEI / 10.13039 / 501100011033)
