The Vall d´Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO) Seeks a “PhD Prostate Cancer Translational Research Group”

Reference: Ref. 16-2020

Application deadline: 31/12/2020

Number of vacancies: 1

Job description:

A position for a PhD student is available at the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology’s (VHIO) Prostate Cancer Translational Research Group headed by Joaquín Mateo MD PhD. We are a young research group with a highly motivating environment that focuses on studying and testing hypothesis-based targeted therapies in prostate cancer. We are especially committed to applying the potential clinical value of our findings to clinical trials.

More info about our group can be found at: https://www.vhio.net/programs-groups/clinical-research/prostate-cancer-translational-research-group/

The successful candidate will form an integral part of the scientific team and will involved in several research projects led by Nicolás Herranz, a senior investigator at the Mateo lab. Dr. Herranz is interested in the identification and characterisation of cellular senescence in response to prostate cancer therapy. This will be studied in patients’ solid and liquid biopsies and in prostate cancer models such as patient-derived xenografts (PDXs) and 2D/3D cell cultures. Understanding the role of therapy-induced senescence as a tumour-adaptation mechanism may open previously unexplored possibilities to develop new drug combinations that may improve clinical outcome for patients.

The position is funded from a research grant to Dr Mateo and Dr Herranz, although the successful candidate is expected to be work in further grants/fellowships applications as part of her/his training program.

Requirements:

We are looking for highly motivated and team-oriented PhD students with good communication skills and fluent English. Applicants with a Master’s Degree, an excellent academic record and previous experience in biomedical research will be favourably considered. The ideal candidate should have skills in molecular biology techniques (immunostainings, western blots, functional assays, etc.), cancer cell culture and mouse models (Animal Experimentation Course is a plus).

Starting date: October-December 2020. This could be flexible upon discussion with the selected candidate.

Application:

Applicants should send a full Curriculum Vitae and a cover letter to selecciorrhh@vhio.net. Please also attach a letter of recommendation to your application.

About VHIO:

Under the leadership of Josep Tabernero, the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO), has established itself as a comprehensive cancer center of proven excellence internationally. It is also thanks to VHIO’s optimal organizational structure based on a purely multidisciplinary and translational model that VHIO talents continue to anticipate and tackle the many unresolved questions in combatting this multifaceted and heterogeneous disease.

Located within the Vall d’Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus, our researchers closely collaborate and interact with Vall d’Hebron physician-scientists. Translational science and clinical research are therefore tightly connected which promotes superb interaction and teamwork which, in turn, accelerates the bench-bedside-bed cycle of knowledge. This privileged environment affords VHIO direct access to patients as well as the entire spectrum of oncology professionals who care for them, and a second-to-none appreciation of how cancer science can translate into more powerful, targeted treatments and better practice for the care of patients.

VHIO’s pioneering model and programs, coupled with its belief in combining strengths through cross-border collaborations, continue to spur advances in reversing cancer resistance, halting metastatic spread, and more effectively treating even the most undruggable tumor types.
