In the recently announced Highly Cited Researcher listing 2016 by Clarivate Analytics – formerly the IP & Science business of Thomson Reuters, Josep Tabernero, Director of the Vall d´Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO), Head, the Medical Oncology Department of the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, and President-elect (2016 – 2017) of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), has been selected for his contributions to research within the Essential Science IndicatorsSM (ESI) category of Clinical Medicine.
His work has consequently been identified as being among the most valuable and significant in this particular field that topped the leader board of ESI defined categories based on the number of highly cited researchers at global scale – totaling at 377 this year in Clinical Medicine.
The listing for 2016 focuses on contemporary research achievement and only considers highly cited papers in science and social sciences journals indexed within the Web of Science Core Collection during the 11-year period (2004 – 2014). These papers rank in the top 1% by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science.
Earning the mark of exceptional impact, Josep´s research has significantly contributed to progressing cancer discovery towards more precise, effective and targeted anti-cancer therapies for an increasing number of patients, and has led to the unmasking of many mechanisms behind tumor development, growth and spread – particularly in gastrointestinal tumors.
On behalf of all at VHIO, we salute and congratulate Josep for this tremendous recognition. We also take this opportunity to applaud the outstanding work of two other existing Highly Cited Researchers to have come from the Vall d´Hebron University Hospital (HUVH) ´stable´ of leading physician-scientists: José Baselga, Physician-in-Chief, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC, New York) and President of VHIO´s Scientific Committee, and Antoni Ribas, Professor of Medicine, Surgery & Medical Pharmacology, the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), who was a former Resident at HUVH.
