Fero Foundation and researchers of VHIO’s Running for Research (R4R) have joined forces to complete the forthcoming Barcelona half marathon, February 11, 2018. More than 25 Fero and VHIO runners will participate in the race to raise awareness on and around the importance of cancer research and secure essential funding to advance novel approaches that are impacting tremendously on the way we consider, tackle and treat cancer.
More specifically, funds raised will support VHIO’s ongoing research in pioneering liquid biopsy as a novel and less invasive approach to more accurately diagnose, track, and more precisely manage disease in individual patients.
Since VHIO incorporated in-house BEAMing liquid biopsy RAS biomarker technology in early 2015, the first academic test center to do so, significant progress has been made in clinically validating and developing this novel approach for the more effective, less invasive ´policing´ of cancer over time, in real time. As an example, VHIO co-led the first large clinical trial to compare liquid v’s conventional tissue biopsy and evidenced that liquid biopsy technology produced more data on tumor mutation throughout the course of the disease, enabling a better target therapy to individual patients with metastatic colorectal cancer.
It is thanks to such progress that we are now seeing how liquid biopsy may be used to monitor tumour evolution to adapt treatment for precision medicine, and improve patient selection across several other tumour types. Only with the continued backing of our scientific endeavors – the precious research that drives these advances – will we continue to potentiate this powerful anti-cancer armory that facilitates a ´finger on the pulse´ follow-up of patients, the more accurate tracking of disease, and a closer monitoring of therapeutic response towards better guiding treatment decisions for our patients.
