The Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM) has awarded 70 SEOM Grants with a total funding of 1,300,000 euros to medical oncologists, SEOM members, enabling them to conduct research and training aimed at improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients. For the fourth consecutive year, this represents the highest number of grants ever awarded by SEOM. The SEOM 2025 Grants, Projects and Awards Ceremony took place on Wednesday, November 12, at the Calderón Theatre in Madrid, as part of the SEOM2025 Congress, held from November 11 to 14.
Among the 70 awardees, seven oncologists from Vall d’Hebron University Hospital and VHIO researchers stand out, one of them receiving two distinctions:
- SEOM Visiting Fellowship for a stay in a leading international center, awarded to Dr. Francisco Javier Ros Montañá from the Gastrointestinal Tumors Group, who will carry out his fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston. Funded by Novartis,
- SEOM Travel Grant for two-month external rotations for 5th-year residents, awarded to Dr. Pau Mascaró Baselga from Vall d’Hebron University Hospital and VHIO researcher, for a stay at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). Funded by AstraZeneca.
- SEOM Travel Grant for two-month external rotations for 5th-year residents, awarded to Dr. Jesús Gustavo Yaringaño Cerna from Vall d’Hebron University Hospital and VHIO researcher, for a stay at Institut Gustave Roussy (Villejuif, France). Funded by AstraZeneca.
- SEOM “Somos futuro” Award to Dr. Eduardo Terán Brage from the Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Cancer and Endocrine Tumors Group. Funded by MERCK.
- SEOM Doctoral Thesis Award for Young Researchers to Dr. Francisco Javier Ros Montañá from the Gastrointestinal Tumors Group.
- SEOM Grant for Impact Projects in Metastatic Cancer using Artificial Intelligence, awarded to Dr. Iosune Baraibar Argota from the Gastrointestinal Tumors Group, for the project “Expanding the benefit of immunotherapy in microsatellite-stable metastatic colorectal cancer through radiomics and circulating biomarkers”. Funded by Gilead.
- SEOM Research Grant in Breast Cancer, awarded to Dr. María Alejandra Rezqallah Arón from the Hereditary Cancer Genetics Group, for the project “Impact on screening recommendations and preference for risk-reducing surgery after risk assessment of developing breast cancer with the CanRisk tool in healthy women carrying a pathogenic variant in BRCA1/2 or PALB2”. Funded by DAIICHI SANKYO.
- SEOM Research Grant in Lung Cancer, awarded to Dr. Laura Masfarré Pintó from the Thoracic Tumors Group, for the project “Molecular and immune profiling of small cell lung cancer (SCLC) histological transformation: exploring new therapeutic opportunities”. Funded by DAIICHI SANKYO.
For the eighth consecutive year, to further strengthen the scientific and academic value of the grants, the SEOM Board of Directors and the Grants Committee have decided that all projects be evaluated externally by the Carlos III Health Institute.
