The Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO) has launched an auction of artworks by artist Esperanza Pérez. This is an initiative that will turn art into a driving force for pancreatic cancer research. The auction was made possible thanks to the collaboration of Arce Auctions, one of Barcelona’s longest-established auction houses.
All proceeds from the sale of artworks will be dedicated to advancing pancreatic cancer research at VHIO. Every artwork purchased is far more than an artistic piece: it is a direct contribution to accelerating research and creating new opportunities for people living with pancreatic cancer.
Esperanza Pérez (Barcelona, 1954) is a multidisciplinary artist – painter, poet, performer and audiovisual creator – with an established career spanning both the arts and healthcare sectors. Her work has been exhibited at numerous contemporary art fairs across the United States, Italy, France and Spain. In addition, she has exhibited in art galleries.
Her close connection with the healthcare world, particularly alongside people living with cancer, together with her own personal experience of the disease, has made her especially aware of the importance of supporting cancer research.
For this reason, she has chosen to transform her art into an act of solidarity by donating this collection of works to VHIO, so that the funds raised through their sale will help drive new advances in pancreatic cancer research.
Specifically, the proceeds from the auction will support the Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic and Neuroendocrine Tumours Group at VHIO, led by Dr Jaume Capdevila. During a meeting between Esperanza Pérez and Dr Capdevila, they discussed the latest advances in research into these tumours. They also discussed recent developments in early detection of pancreatic cancer.
“Thank you for this generous gesture. We hope these artworks will help support the pancreatic cancer research we carry out at VHIO and contribute to the development of new treatments for our patients,” said Dr Capdevila.
This initiative is a powerful example of how solidarity can accelerate progress in cancer research.
