The European Society for Medical Oncology Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancers (ESMO GI) was held in Berlin from 1st to 4th July. It is one of the leading international meetings dedicated to research in digestive tumors. The congress brings together experts from around the world to present the latest advances in prevention, diagnosis, precision medicine and new therapeutic strategies, as well as to discuss the main clinical challenges in the management of these tumors. In this context, VHIO professionals presented some of the center’s latest advances in gastrointestinal tumors.
Dr. Josep Tabernero, Head of the Medical Oncology Department at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital and Director of VHIO, presented on Friday, during a Proffered Paper session, the results of the international phase III KRYSTAL-10 trial, which evaluates the combination of adagrasib plus cetuximab versus chemotherapy as second-line treatment in patients with KRAS G12C-mutated metastatic colorectal cancer.
Although the study did not meet its two primary endpoints compared with chemotherapy, the combination demonstrated antitumor activity and a manageable safety profile, supporting its potential as a chemotherapy-free targeted therapy strategy for previously treated patients with this molecular subtype of metastatic colorectal cancer. In addition, Dr. Tabernero participated as a speaker in an educational session on esophagogastric cancer dedicated to new therapeutic strategies beyond HER2-targeted therapies and PD-L1 immunotherapy.
Dr. Elena Élez, Head of the Gastrointestinal Tumors Unit at Vall d’Hebron University Hospital and Head of VHIO’s Gastrointestinal and Endocrine Tumors Group, chaired an educational session on metastatic colorectal cancer, where she delivered a presentation on the management of colorectal cancer with high microsatellite instability or DNA mismatch repair deficiency.
