International Clinical Trials Day is celebrated on May 20 to raise awareness about the fundamental role of biomedical research in developing new treatments, evaluating their safety and efficacy, and advancing precision medicine. In this context, clinical trials are essential for translating scientific discoveries into new therapeutic options for patients.

VHIO is an international reference center in oncology clinical trials and an example of the potential of translational research to accelerate the arrival of new therapies for patients, having contributed to the approval of 79 new oncology indications since its launch in 2006.

This commitment is particularly reflected in the strong focus on early-phase studies, which make it possible to evaluate innovative treatments in the initial stages of development. During 2025, VHIO maintained 1,091 active clinical trials across all phases, more than 57% (630) of which corresponded to Phase I and II studies. In addition, 264 new clinical trials were launched this year, with 1,858 patients enrolled and a total of 3,464 active patients throughout the year.

In this context, the activity of VHIO’s Cancer Molecular Therapy Research Unit (UITM-CaixaResearch) stands out. The unit is internationally recognized for early-phase oncology clinical trials. During 2025, the UITM-CaixaResearch Unit maintained 351 active Phase I and basket trials and enrolled 673 patients, figures that reinforce VHIO’s role as a driver of clinical innovation and precision medicine.

Beyond scientific and clinical excellence, VHIO is also a pioneer in the management and organization of clinical trials. The center has a highly specialized structure composed of professionals from different disciplines who work in a coordinated manner to support studies and optimize their development. This flexible and adaptive organization helps maintain the highest standards of quality and excellence while accelerating access to new therapeutic options for people with cancer.
