
Program Description
The VHIO Foundation is pleased to announce the launch of the VHIO Undergraduate International Computational Oncology Award, aimed at undergraduate students in Computational Life Sciences from around the world. This fellowship is designed to recognize outstanding students in the field of computational oncology research, supporting their academic and professional development through a rotational experience in one of the computational laboratories within VHIO (Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology), one of the leading cancer research centers worldwide.
The award will allow the winner to undertake an intensive one-month stay at VHIO, where they will collaborate on innovative research projects in computational oncology.
Candidates should fulfill the following eligibility criteria at the time of the call deadline. If one or more of the eligibility criteria are not fulfilled, the proposal will be declared ineligible and will be withdrawn from any further consideration:
- To To be eligible, the Bachelor’s Thesis must have been completed during the academic year 2024-2025.
- The topic of the Bachelor’s Thesis should focus on the field of computational oncology research, covering areas such as cancer genomics, cancer transcriptomics, Radiomics, AI in oncology, digital pathology, epigenomics, cancer data science, omics, data integration, methodological approaches, data analysis, and bioinformatics.
- Undergraduate students in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Artificial Intelligence, Computational Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Data Science, Biostatistics, Mathematics, and related fields with an excellent academic record and a strong commitment to scientific research are encouraged to apply.
- A high level of English.
- We will take into consideration the promotion of diversity among institutions and universities.

- Motivation Letter
- Reference Letter
- Extended abstract of minimum 700 words/maximum 1000 words

You will only be able to submit the application once all requested fields and documents are included. All the information must be submitted by the application deadline: May 23rd, 2025.
Applications will be assessed based on the information provided in the application form.
Short-listed candidates will be invited to present their Bachelor’s Thesis in the format of a scientific poster in the Award Ceremony that will be held in Barcelona on July 8th, 2025. The event is expected to start at 10 AM and conclude by 4 PM.
The selection committee will evaluate the posters to decide the overall winner, who will be announced later during the ceremony.
The following main criteria will be taken into consideration:
- Quality, statement of the problem, methodology, results, innovation and potential of the project 70%
- Excellence, creativity, oral presentation skills and potential of the candidate 30%
VHIO will cover the expenses of having the posters printed and travel expenses for short-listed candidates from outside Barcelona.
Details on the venue together with the ceremony schedule will be provided in due time.
The day of the event, the selection committee will announce the winner. The prize will include:
- One-month lab rotation at VHIO, with 500€ to cover basic expenses (e.g., materials, meals).
- Transportation coverage for travel to and from your own city.
- A 150€ cash prize to recognize the student’s effort and participation in the program.
